Week 42 - All in a Day

Focus on Life week 42

Mmm How to deal with this, I'm a self employed gallery owner and jewellery artist....  So some days I make beads..
In the summer I always start and end the day by putting out open flags... this season of the year it's by chance or appointment!
These beads were made for someone... well I needed 9  think there's 22 or 23 there (my hearts are free form no mold! other than what grows on them when I forget them in a bucket of dirty water)

Some days I make components
occasionally I even make them into pieces of jewellery!

Enamelled components for a gallery show in SK
(I cut out the cow skulls using a blanking mold and my hydraulic press!)  Enamelled pinwheels made into earrings... yes they do spin!

Most days in October I pick grapes

OK the grape vine picture is from Sept when the grapes were green... but it's pouring rain today so ... Big picture is processing grapes to make a orange cranberry pecan loaf using 'concord' grapes...I probably bake 3 times a year...

Most evenings I knit
These Socks are a triple first... First time  I've knit from the toe up, First time I've knit two socks at once, and First time I've knit socks using circular needles.... These are for my husband... they ended up a bit big!
Two at once is fun, knitting on circular needles sucks, and I quite like the way the heel looks on these....

One evening this week some of the resident deers wandered past during supper

She had two fawns earlier in the summer but one seems to be gone, also she has been running around on three legs most of the summer... still is so I'm not sure how she'll do this winter!

And I read.... Most evenings in the hot tub...

This week was book bus week, the bus comes to the island once every 4 weeks, I missed the Sept stop...
The top two book are by Alan Bradley... a series about a 12 year old girl in England trying to figure out creative ways to 'kill' her two older sisters.  I usually get about 10 books and get through 7 or 8....

But I start everyday by feeding my fish, Sophie , winding my cuckoo clock, and grabbing a cup of coffee... I actually end the day by turning off Sophie's light and winding the cuckoo clock again, as it was hung two inches too low to make it twenty -four hours!

I had this post all queued to post tonight then realized I forgot to mention the hours I waste on the computer every day... no need for pictures you all know what a computer looks like!

Week 36... In Two

Focus on life.. in two.. pairs.. couples... duos... twins...

Earrings are what come to mind as a  sometimes jeweller.....
Make a million beads...  sort into pairs
1000000 beads = 7 pairs
And 4 enameled light-house beads...
note the port and starboard designations

OK so none of the million beads ended up in this collage....

And yes knitting needles usually come in pairs too unless I'm knitting in the car where I don't have backups and loose one!

Week # 4 Create Art

I like to knit... I actually learned how to knit the summer we spent in Ireland when I was 12.. I often do design my own sweaters... but when I travel I usually drag along something to knit... I'm still not sure if airport security  allows knitting needles, so I don't tend to knit on planes or in airports.  I thought security didaalow needles now.  but I had a set of double pointed needles confiscated in Spain last year...  This trip I dragged along a kit for a shawl made out of mohair and silk. Totally mindless knitting!  The reason why the following picture does not have any needles in it is because the needles called for are entirely the wrong gauge/size.  The pattern is American it calls for size 9 doesn't give a metric equivalent size... but since it is printed in the US one presumes that the needle size is American which gives a metric 5.5 needle... well guess what that needle size is going to give me a little neck ruffle not a shawl... so tomorrow I will go buy myself a set of much larger needles!  The pattern is actually full of errors.... I don't remember errors in patterns when I first started to knit, now most patterns have errors.

This was inadvertantly posted on Wednesday... I couldn't figure out how to change the post date once it was live!

I am back to where I was on Wednesday... using 9mm needles not 9 US... It was a US pattern that said size 9 needles so I assumed the meant 9 US which is 5.5 mm... Hopefully now I will end up with a shawl not a neck ruffle!

I decided to join an on-line knit along....

This is the pattern graph all taped together....  It's knit from the top down... I've made it to the 5th row.. I'm well behind most of the people as I joined late and just got my yarn yesterday... pictures of the WIP will follow!  (i'm knitting the smallest size which is the red lines)

The KAL is for 'the pan-am jacket' which if it works should be pretty!  This is the picture from the front of the pattern... you can download it from interweave or find it in the winter 2011 Interweave knits magazine....

Mine will be purple I'm thinking about making the bands red.....

Almost wordless Wednesday And the winner is ....

Drumroll ... & the number randomlt generated is.... # 5   OK so I won.... guess that's my lucky whatever for this year....  Another drumroll #32... yep the last person who entered Karen Williams....

Tangerine Tango baby yarn!
These are  suppose to fit a 12 month old... next winter  The hat pattern was on Ravelry the mitts came out of a prehistoric knitting booklet and the scarf  was made traying to match the flower on the hat ... but the hat was knit in the round and the pattern didn't want to be knit back and forth and then I got to the other end and had to try and do the pattern in reverse.................

Almost Wordless Wednesday & Bead Table Wednesday (BTW)

My bead table has been taken over by an 'afgan'  .... My mother decided that that was what they wanted for Christmas ... last weekend.... &  My husband wants to know why the factory doesn't wind the yarn into balls before they ship it...... I think it's a cost issue ...
 Comments????
Don't you just love the colours in this?  I actually bought a 'kit' seemed easier than finding yarn that matched...  Will I get this done by Christmas.....

Almost Wordless Wednesday & Bead Table Wednesday (BTW)

Latest panel....  It's actually sitting upside down in my family room window... but I have figured out how to hang it... then it should be off to it's new home!
The scarf... I need to finish the ends... think I will make a flower out of the left over beads and yarn... Anyone have any nice flower patterns... I have a few but they're for felting so not nearly enough stitches!  I took too long to get back to it after I finished the first end ... so the two ends didn't match so I had to rip back end number one and redo it....  the scarf was actually started in the middle and knitted towards the ends....

And...  I did get my tooth refilled the day after the original attempt....  1 month + two days later it's still holding.... and I'm getting used to the tooth's new shape!

Bead Table Monday

Attempting to knit a scarf using seed beads... I get to knit 2 or 3  rows then I get to move beads... I started with 220 inches of beads and I use about an inch of beads every 4  rows.  Think this project may last quite awhile!
The triangular 'seed bead'  beaded beads will be earrings and a pendant... Not yet how I'll work the pendant!

Almost wordless Wednesday

Aren't these 'Kroc Sox fun..... I love knitting these! Believe the hotter the summer the more 'SOX" and felted hats I sell!

Mitten Trees

Well today is December 6th which makes it Mitten Tree Day.... I'd never heard of a Mitten tree until I moved here in 2001. The local church has had a Mitten tree for ever... The woman that organizes it is in her 80's and started it when she moved here. (married here!)

She is like me from AWAY... it doesn't matter how long you live here you will always be from AWAY... even if you have children who marry locals... their "mother" will still be from AWAY...

Our Mitten Tree is a tree that is decorated in 'hand' knit mittens that are collected and donated to a local charity just before Christmas so that everyone has mittens for Christmas. 50 years ago I'm sure all of the mittens actually were hand-knit... now I'm sure some aren't as it's now cheaper to buy mitts than it is to buy the wool/yarn to make the mitts!

This isn't our mitten tree but check this link for a Mitten Tree in Ottawa ON

So knit some mitts from scrap or buy a pair of mitts and add them to your local mitten tree... I'm sure there is some little pair of hands out there somewhere that is cold!

I knit but, most of my knitting now is down with wool which I then felt on the driveway (that's another BLOG!) ... This is a hat pre felting.... My husband would say this is one of my better angles and yes the picture is sideways................... But you get the idea!
(Darth Vader in Red?)

I think most everyday knitting these years is done from love, or boredom... there is no way with the cost of modern day yarns that knitting is an economical way to put sweaters into your closet!
